General Wellness FAQs

What are some anti aging habits to protect my glow?

Be kind to your skin.

At Totally Tan & Spa, we approach wellness from a holistic angle. We believe caring for yourself inside affects how you look and feel on the outside as much as tanning and other modalities that make you beautiful on the outside.

Our anti-aging lotions are a great way to defy aging skin. Here are a few other helpful tips:

  1. If you smoke or vape, quit: smoking and vaping are significant contributors to aging and sallow-looking skin, crow feet & bags under your eyes, lack of energy and premature aging.
  2. Another common environmental stressor on age is alcohol consumption: less alcohol, more glow down the road.
  3. You are what you eat. If you eat junk food, you get junk results what you put inside matters. The health of the skin comes from within.
  4. Stop using skin care products that hurt! Surprise! Skincare that stings or burns is damaging your skin. The old adage “if it stings, you know it’s working” does not apply to anti-aging skincare. Stinging and burning equal ‘drying’ aka ‘dying’. We want to moisturize at all times!
  5. Stay hydrated: the ubiquitous piece of advice everyone gives, but it’s true: hydration is wellness. If you aren’t staying hydrated, try getting a cool water bottle. It’s no mystery why they are so popular. Set reminders on your phone. Drink water instead of soda (it’s cheaper too & soda is the number one cause of diabetes, including ‘diet’).
  6. Go easy on your face: Excessive scrubbing, brushing, or washing is not always the answer! Your skin’s natural oils are essential to elasticity and longevity. Be kind to your skin, and don’t over-scrub.
  7. Moisturize. Moisturize. Moisturize. Then repeat. Using a moisturizer that suits your skin type every day is the best tip out there.

What is 'Wellness'?

The Global Wellness Institute defines wellness as the active pursuit of activities, choices, and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health.
Wellness as a trend is pretty new but wellness in practice goes back centuries. In the past, it might have been referred to as ‘balance’ or ‘enlightenment’ or ‘being present’ or even ‘being well rounded’. In more modern terms ‘everything in moderation’ or ‘don’t put all your eggs in one basket’ apply. The core concept of Wellness is to ‘do a little bit of everything and not too much of anything and be conscious of it so that over time, you become more at ease with life.’
That’s actually not ‘oversimplifying’ Wellness. It’s supposed to be simple. To make it even easier, it’s displayed graphically as high-level categories in The Wellness Wheel you see here. Take a second to look at it.
The basics are simple and anyone can use The Wellness Wheel because your commitment level is totally personal. There are a number of categories of life activities, usually varying from 4 up to 12 with items such as Physical, Emotional, Social, Intellectual, Occupational. Some wheels feature Nutritional and or alternates like “Career” or “Financial”. Tap or right-click to download this wheel or do a Google Images Search for more. Drawing your own is fine, too, but not if it’s just a circle that says ‘yoga’ in the middle. If you leave off the things you don’t ‘love’, it defeats the purpose.
To get started, take some time out (right now) to consider how much time/effort you spent in each category over the last 24 hours. If you went for a walk, for example, you did an activity in Physical. Did you vacuum? You worked a little on your Environmental. Did you skip lunch or eat? Was it fast food or healthy? Physical/Nutritional.  Did you spend the entire day at work and not with family? Or was it 80/20? Score in Occupational, but are you neglecting Social/Spiritual/Emotional? The goal is to more equally and sanely divide your time & energy amongst all the categories in your wheel for better balance and a healthier lifestyle.
Most people will notice right away that humans tend to focus 100% on things we love to the exclusion of things we don’t. We might be an exercise fanatic but maybe our home is in disarray because we don’t ‘love’ cleaning. That might lead to feeling ‘like a slob’ despite having shredded abs! Why? We are spending too much time on Physical and none on Environmental. Wellness simply says, “It’s ok to love the gym [Physical], but let’s make 20 minutes a night to speed clean our home [Environmental] and consciously leave the gym early to make it a reality.” As you distribute your efforts, you’ll find yourself more at ease with life.

Sun FAQs

Do I need a tanning lotion?

Yes! Tanning lotion is a skin care product. Remember, our skin is the largest organ in our body and it is so important we take care of it properly. Not only do tanning skin care products add vitamins, nutrients and moisture for overall better color, but these products will actually increase your tanning potential 60-70%! Why tan more often when you can get better color, faster with the use of the right skin care products!

Can I tan with tattoos?

There are as many answers to the question “Can I tan with tattoos?” as there are tattoos. In fact, tattoos vary so much there is no ‘right’ answer. There are many factors to consider: the age of your tattoo, how recent you got them, the amount of detail, the color, location and size, would all play a role. Two things we can all agree on: a lot of people have tattoos now and some basic common sense is what is in order for exposure to sunlight and UV.
First, if you are really worried about tanning your tattoo, be safe. Cover it when in direct sunlight or UV, whether indoors or outside. ‘When in doubt, sunblock it out.’ Apply sunscreen daily. If your tattoos are new, please be sure to follow the advice of the tattoo artist who did the work. Most will advise at minimum days or weeks out of any direct UV light. Follow their instructions as they may be specific to your tattoo.
Always stay hydrated and moisturized. Most online advice would agree that moisturizing and hydrating extend the artistic quality of tattoos.

What bronzers & lotions do you carry at Totally Tan & Spa?

At Totally Tan & Spa, we only carry the highest quality name brand bronzers and lotions that offer the most benefits to beautify and enhance our guests’ skin and their tan. A product has to live up to our high standards before you will see it on our shelf.

Why doesn’t Totally Tan & Spa have any old high pressure “UVA” sunbeds?

Sun tanning uses two different UV rays – UVA and UVB. UVB is used to help stimulate melanin production for a base tan and increased Vitamin D production.  UVA does not help the skin produce Vitamin D. We feel UVB is more important for our overall wellness and getting a beautiful sun-kissed glow. You can trust our sunbeds for the most benefits and results.

Spray FAQs

Why do some self tanners make me turn orange?

It can be a combination of the type of self-tanner used and the level of DHA (the active self-tanning ingredient). Self-Tanners have come a long way since their introduction. Another common reason we see this type of orange color is from pH imbalance in the skin. We always recommend using body washes and soaps that are sulfate and alcohol-free. This will not only help keep your pH level balanced but aid in longer lasting color too! At Totally Tan & Spa, we also offer a pH balancing product to be used before your spray tan to balance the protein level in your skin for the most natural looking results!

Will the solution from the spray tan come off on my clothes?

Some of the bronze “cosmetic tint” color may rub off on clothing or bed sheets. This is most likely to happen when you get dressed immediately after tanning. Our spray tan dries with every pass to ensure optimal application and to minimize the chance of the bronzers transferring to clothing. We also recommend that you wear loose-fitting, darker clothes after your spray tan session. The Cosmetic tint is water-soluble. Therefore, in most cases, the color will come out of clothing in the wash.

Why is keeping skin moisturized essential to maintain great spray tan results?

It is important to keep skin moisturized after your spray tan as dry, flaky skin will slough off faster and color will fade sooner. Spray tan-extending products with a light self-tanning bronzer helps hydrate skin and maintain even, natural looking color longer by providing subtle bronzers.

Should I moisturize before I do an spray Tan session at Totally Tan & Spa?

You should use a moisturizer regularly to keep your skin hydrated and healthy, which will contribute to a more even, natural looking spray tan. However, it is recommended NOT to apply moisturizers 2 hours prior to spray tanning and 4 to 6 hours after.

How many days will a spray tan from Totally Tan & Spa last?

The longevity of a spray tan depends on the skin’s natural exfoliation process, and on the skin regimen followed before and after application. On average, a spray tan will last 4-7 days. The “life span” of a spray tan also depends on your skin’s natural exfoliation. The faster your skin regenerates, the faster the spray tan will fade. The tan created by the DHA and Erythrulose affects only the top layer of the skin and will begin to fade after 4 to 5 days as the skin naturally begins to exfoliate. Remember to moisturize for the longest lasting color!

How frequently do you recommend going in for a spray tan? Can I do it for several days in a row?

The frequency of spray tanning application depends on your skin cell turn over and preference of color intensity. People with quick cell turn-overs may want to do a spray tan every 3-4 days to keep color fresh, while others may need to apply only once every 7-10 days.

How do I prepare for my spray tan at Totally Tan & Spa

Arrive at the Totally Tan & Spa near you showered, shaven, free of make-up, perfume, oil, body sprays, deodorant and moisturizer for optimal results. Some also prefer to exfoliate prior to their spray tan so solution has fresh, less-flaky skin during application. Bring loose, dark fitting clothing for after your session. You will be flaunting a gorgeous tan in minutes. About a total of 10 to 15 minutes with prep and post preparation.

How long should I wait after my spray tan at Totally Tan & Spa before I shower or get wet?

It is best to wait 6-8 hours after the spray tan application before you shower to give the DHA time to fully react with skin proteins.

Can I do an spray tan and a tanning session the same day at Totally Tan & Spa?

Yes, in fact, we recommend it! This is called a double dip! Since spray tanning is UV-Free, we recommend tanning prior to your spray tan session to help open pores for deeper, darker, longer lasting results from your spray tan! We highly recommend using one of our products that are made for tanning and spray tanning immediately after. Ask our Spa consultant for recommendations.

Can I work out after my spray tan session?

It is best to wait about 6-8 hours after your spray tan before partaking in any strenuous activities that may cause perspiration. This will give the DHA time to fully react with skin proteins as well as prevent streaking that could result from excessive perspiration.

How do I apply Barrier Cream correctly?

Barrier Cream is applied as a protective barrier to prevent unwanted color on the skin’s porous areas such as hands, feet, elbows, knees, nails and cuticles. Dispense a generous amount of Barrier Cream onto your hands and apply an even coating to the palms of the hands, in-between the fingers, tips of fingers, covering nails and around the cuticles. Also apply a layer of Barrier Cream to the bottom of feet, in-between the toes, covering toenails and cuticles and to the bending, rougher portions of elbows and knees.

Do I need to wear sunscreen if I have a spray tan?

Although you may feel and look like you have a real tan, a spray tan is only the temporary appearance of a tan and therefore provides your skin with no real sunburn protection. It is still recommended to wear sunscreen when outdoors to protect your skin from overexposure.

How does Totally Tan & Spa's Infrared Cocoon Wellness Pro help me lose weight?

Infrared Cocoon Wellness Pro saunas have been shown to aid in weight loss by heating your core temperature to induce sweating. Increases in blood flow and heart rate are a result, which, much like moderate exercise, has been shown to help you lose weight. Saunas also help with faster and more effective muscle recovery, which helps you return to the gym, sport, or activity more quickly.

How much weight can I lose in our Infrared Cocoon Wellness Pro?

There’s a lot that goes into weight loss, including your current weight, nutrition, diet, exercise and fitness level. Totally Tan & Spa’s Cocoon Wellness Pro can be a great addition to your weight loss plan. Sessions have been shown to burn as much as 600+ calories, which may be similar to an hour-long jogging session on a treadmill.

What is the difference in steam sauna and our infrared sauna for weight loss?

A traditional sauna uses wet or dry heat to warm the air around you, which induces sweating. This can aid in weight loss, but it has shown that the weight loss is mainly due to loss of water – or heavy sweating. An infrared sauna heats your body from the inside out, which allows you to stay in the sauna longer and increases your heart rate. Infrared sauna use results in more calories burned in a shorter period of time.

What are the potential benefits of Red Light Therapy at Totally Tan & Spa?

This gentle yet extremely effective treatment is very beneficial as an anti-aging and skin rejuvenation tool.  Red Light Therapy is also a great tool for pain management and reducing inflammation. Cryotherapy FAQs

Do I need an appointment?

No appointment is necessary, as our quick 3-minute sessions means minimal wait times for Cryotherapy. Come in today to start ‘chilling’ with us!

How does cryotherapy compare to an ice bath?

The benefits of a three-minute Full-body Cryotherapy treatment are equivalent to those of a twenty- to thirty-minute ice bath. Unlike an ice bath, cryotherapy does not involve downtime.

Is it cold? Comfortable?

Yes, it is cold, but because the air contains no moisture, the process never freezes skin tissues, muscles, or organs. You will feel chilled but not uncomfortably cold.  Like dry heat, the cold feels very different than you think. Most guests report feeling great immediately after their treatment.

What if I am often cold or get cold easily?

Cryotherapy is a dry cold with no moisture and tolerable even to those who consider themselves cold intolerant. Cryotherapy improves circulation throughout the body and stimulates the production of brown fat, so your future ability to tolerate cold should improve.

Can I catch a cold from Full-body Cryotherapy?

No. The immediate cold impact of cryotherapy will raise the internal body temperature for a short period and stimulate your immune system. Boosting the immune system can help decrease the severity and frequency of future colds.

How long is each session?

A Full-body Cryotherapy treatment lasts three minutes; however, you may end the session anytime.

How often should I do Cryotherapy?

The peak benefits of Full-body Cryotherapy are best enjoyed as a result of a regular routine. While guests will experience benefits from a single treatment, we recommend doing FBC three to five times a week for the first two weeks. This will induce cumulative effects in the body. After that, maintenance as needed to sustain benefits.

Who should avoid Cryotherapy?

The following conditions are contraindications to Full-body Cryotherapy:
  • Pregnancy
  • Heart disease
  • Untreated or elevated blood pressure (blood pressure above 180/95 mmHg)
  • Cold-activated asthma
  • Severe Raynaud’s syndrome

Age requirement for Cryotherapy?

12 and older. People ages 12 and older may use cryotherapy, however we ask that all people younger than 16 always have a parental guardian on site. Ages 12-17 need parental consent.

What do I wear?

At Totally Tan & Spa, guests are provided with:
  • Headband
  • Face mask
  • Gloves
  • Dry socks
  • Slippers
To protect their extremities during treatment. All guests must remove all jewelry and exterior body piercings. If you have piercings that cannot be removed, please cover them with cotton gauze and a band-aid. Guests should refrain from applying oils, lotions, or cologne before treatment.

Will I have to redo my hair/makeup after a session?

No, we ask that there be no excess moisture on the face. Cryotherapy can be applied directly over makeup and will not affect your hair at all. It is preferable to have no makeup on, but if that’s not possible, any moisture needs to be fully absorbed.

Do I have to take a shower before or after a treatment?

Showering is not necessary before or after cryotherapy. The entire procedure is dry and does not make your skin wet. Many guests come by during their lunch break since the entire treatment is only 3 minutes long.

Can I do a Infrared Sauna and Cryo session in the same day?

No, it is not recommended to do both of these sessions in the same day. You are actually offsetting your benefits and stressing out your body by doing one immediately after the other.

Float FAQs

Do I need an appointment?

Float appointments are available and preferred if you want to secure a specific time / date. However you may walk-in and float if the service is available. Please call 763-355-9260 to schedule your float today.

How long should I wait to float after a spray tan?

Floats can strip color,  we recommend you waiting 5-7 days to float after your spray tan.

Can I tan and float in the same day?

Yes. You can tan and float in the same day! It is recommended to tan after your float session when using a bronzer. We have showers available, you must shower prior to floating.

If using multiple services in one visit, what order should I use them in?

You can not Spray Tan before floating . The services you can enjoy prior to your float are all our Luxury Spa & Sun services.

I just got a tattoo and/or body piercing should I float?

We do supply Petroleum Jelly for any minor scratches, hang nails, etc.  We recommend waiting until your tattoo/body piercings are fully healed before stepping into our floats.

What is the water like?

At body temperature and thousands of pounds of Epsom salt, the water you’ll find yourself reclined in will have you losing track of where it ends and your body begins.

How long do I float?

For an hour – or more if you’d like – your mind is free of distraction and your body is free of gravity. The nothingness of that experience, is everything and more.

What happens when I float?

The outside world is now non-existent. Your focus can turn inwards where amazing things will happen.  It is an experience you have to try to fully understand!

Should I eat before my float?

Absolutely up to you. We recommend eating a light meal 30 minutes before your float, you don’t want to hear your stomach growling while you’re trying to relax.

Are you in complete darkness?

You can be!  Some floaters like to be in total darkness while others like to have some light. Our floats are equipped with an incredible fiber optic system, so you can float underneath a star like surface. We also have a colored light that illuminates the entire float space. Everything can be toggled on or off depending on your preference.

Is there a ‘right way’ to float?

No. There’s no right or wrong way to float. Keep the lights and/or fiber optics on or off. Listen to music or float in complete silence the choice is yours.

How does floating affect my skin?

Thousands of pounds of rich Epsom salt cradling your body will leave your skin silky and your hair smooth when you emerge. Unlike what you experience after a long bath, your skin will not be pruney! Epsom salt has a long list of skin benefits.

Is it clean?

Extremely!  We are clean freaks at Totally Tan & Spa and we set out to find the float tank with the absolute best filtration system.  We have a 1 Micron Filtration System that is able to filter particles from the water 1 micron in size and FDA compliant for drinking water. Standard competitors use a 10-30 Micron filter system.  We have the first and only top rated filter made specifically for float tanks.

What can I expect?

Every float experience is different and unique to each user. But probably something you’ve never felt before.

What if I don’t know how to float?

No problem. The Epsom salt solution will make it impossible not to float. You couldn’t not float if you tried!

What should I do to prepare?

Nothing specific. Ideally avoid caffeine 60-90 minutes before you float. It also is recommended to not shave or wax right beforehand because the healing Espom salt might sting a bit.

What kind of tanks do you have?

We use the Superior Float Tank brand. The same brand trusted by celebrities, famous musicians and sporting teams like the New England Patriots, Ohio State Buckeyes and other major professional & collegiate level universities. It delivers an unparalleled floating experience like none other, it also is made right here in the USA.

What do I need to bring?

Nothing. Just bring yourself and be ready to escape reality, if you would like to bring personal care items you are more than welcome but everything you need will be provided.

Age requirement for floating?

12 and older. People ages 12 and older may float, however we ask that all people younger than 16 always have a parental guardian on site. Ages 12-17 need parental consent.

Are our Float Tanks Wheelchair-Accessible?

Totally Tan & Spa is wheelchair-accessible, including our float room, which is ADA Compliant. If you have the upper body strength to lift yourself out of your chair and into bed, for example, you will likely be able to lift yourself out of your chair and into (a) a chair in the shower, and (b) over the float tank door threshold, which is 18 inches off the floor and approximately three feet wide.

If you do not have good upper body mobility/strength, you are, of course, more than welcome to have helpers come in with you and help you in and out of the shower and float tank. We have a comfortable lounge area for assistants to hang out in while you float. This would likely be best with two helpers, one who steps into the float tank with you (there’s lots of room), holding your upper body, and a second person helping guide your legs through the door. Unfortunately our staff are not allowed to assist in this process.

Another area worth mentioning is that in order to use our float tanks, you must have full control over bodily function. Unfortunately, those with unpredictable intestinal or urinary function should not float, as this poses a risk to the quality of the water, and therefore safety of others. Any damage to the water in our float tanks from using them with a known incontinence issue will, unfortunately, result in a rather large bill for 2,000+ lbs of Epsom salts.

Should I wear a swimsuit?

No, you float naked because you don’t want anything touching you. A swimsuit touching your skin is sensory input that can take away from the experience. You are more aware of everything in the tank, so any straps or elastics will be distracting. The tank rooms are private.

Can I float if I’m menstruating?

Yes. Just follow the same protocol you would for a swimming pool.

Can I drown if I fall asleep while I’m floating?

You will not drown in a float tank if you fall asleep. The density caused by the Epsom salt water makes you buoyant and difficult to turn over. If you do turn over, you will get salt water in your eyes and mouth which will wake you up.

Can I float if I am pregnant?

Yes. With the okay from your physician or midwife, you may float into your second or third trimester. Many pregnant women find floating very beneficial, helping to relieve the joint pain and inflammation associated with carrying additional baby weight. Floating has been shown to reduce cortisol (stress) levels and boost endorphins which may help counteract the hormonal changes associated with pregnancy which can result in insomnia, anxiety, and depression. Many mothers-to-be in the tank experience an amazing bonding experience with their unborn baby this is known as the “mirror effect” where the baby rests peacefully in the womb while the mother rest in a similar womb-like environment.

Can 2 (or more) people float in the same tank at once?

No. Our tanks are large enough but we believe floating is deeply personal and should be experienced alone.  Additionally MN regulations prohibit more than one person in a tank.

What if I wear contacts?

You will most likely prefer to float without them, so be sure to bring your case and solution.

Is it weird?

It is different. Your body is in an environment it probably hasn’t been in since birth. So yes. It will take some getting used to. But what worth doing doesn’t.

Is floating ‘Legit’?

Yes! Floating has existed for over 70 years with numerous published studies and media coverage that has dived deep into the physical, spiritual, and intellectual benefits that you will experience. Floating is proven and you will be amazed how many benefits are linked to float therapy.
